Deciding our art style

We’ve embarked on the journey of building our strategy card game, and while the design process is going great, we decided it’s time to experiment with a few art styles to see what fits the overall vibe.

This is a tricky task, especially since the design isn’t fully complete yet. It’s hard to jump into the artistic side without having all the mechanics locked down. But, we’ve solidified enough of the core elements to give us direction. One thing that’s clear is we’ll have multiple playable characters, each fitting a specific role: Tank, DPS, or Support.

We’ve also talked a lot about the overall feel of the game. We know one thing for sure—we don’t take ourselves too seriously, and the game should reflect that. It should be fun, lighthearted, and free-spirited (like free speech, not free lunch—we still need to eat if we’re going to keep making games!). With this foundation, we decided to start by focusing on the Tank character.

Now comes the sketches: the wonderful, indecisive stage—just the first of many challenges ahead.

Here’s what we’re calling "Style A." It’s clean, colorful, and familiar. The characters bring a bright and joyful vibe, which is definitely what we’re aiming for.

Style B

And this is "Style B." It’s equally colorful and fun, but with a more playful, slightly quirky edge. It nails that “not too serious” tone we’ve been after and feels super stylish.

Decision

After some debate, we decided to go forward with Style B. We felt it better captured the playful energy we want for the game. So, we created a few more character designs in this style.

The character design process was so exciting! We especially loved a couple of these designs, and we’ve officially settled on our Tank. Can you guess which one? Hint: he’s the one getting a lot of attention in the portrait below.

Yep, it’s him! Meet our Tank: a gentle robot, cursed with immense power that’s beyond his control. He loves life and anything colorful, but his massive hands and overwhelming strength make it hard for him to embrace the little joys of life—though he tries!

We’re refining his design now, getting him polished up and ready for action. Did you fall in love with him too? Don’t worry if you had another favorite among the sketches—they might just show up later in the game.

See you in the next devlog :)
